The Nine Cocktail

The Nine is a delicious cocktail from “The Nightmare Before Dinner” the book I mentioned last week in the post on Beetle Pie. The book features recipes from Beetle House, Zack Neill’s Tim Burton inspired restaurants located in Los Angeles and New York.

Tim Burton + food?  You had me at hello!  😍

The Nine Cocktail4

I love a sour cocktail and The Nine is the best blend of sweet, sour and apple flavours.

And it’s a great colour!  An almost iridescent green.  You can almost imagine it glowing in the dark.  It doesn’t (I checked) but it looks as if it might!  This is a fun cocktail  As is the book it came from!

If you like your food to come with a pun (and I think by now we all know that I do!) or you are a fan of Tim Burton, or you want to dine at Beetle House but can’t afford the flight to New York or L.A, then this book is for you!  Or the film buff in your life! Christmas is coming peeps….

The Nightmare before Dinner begins with Sauces and Dips for the Recently Deceased – my favourite being the Veruca Sauce! To be used only when you “want an Oompa Loompa now, Daddy, now”…or, probably more commonly, to put over chicken, fish or veggies as it is a delicious sounding honey butter garlic sauce.

And with all due respect to Tim Burton – there will only ever be one Verucca Salt.  (And just so we’re clear? It’s not his version)

The next chapter is caled The Nightmares Before Dinner.  This contains recipes for items like Hallowpeno Honey Cheddar Cornbread, Charlie Corn Bucket and Beetle Bacon Bread….just listen to this mouthwatering description

“It’s a hearty sundried tomato and bacon “pizza” with a sweet balsamic reduction, soft mozzarella cheese and crisp scallions”

Here’s the picture from the book:

Beetle Bacon Bread

How I good does that look? Let me tell you a little secret into my obviously maladjusted childhood.  When I was a child, apparently I would kiss the tv screen whenever my favourite handsome boy of the moment would appear.  This picture kind of made me want to lick the screen…

I didn’t!!!!!  I swear  I didn’t!

And let’s never talk about any of this ever again.

The next chapter, Soups and Salads for The Living contains, of course, a Giant Peach Salad.  The Macarbre Mains section has an Edward Burger Hands, a Shrimpy Hollow and my very, very favourite….ah no.  I’m saving that one for a special occasion.

But the Edward Burger Hands sounds delish!  And a lot easier to eat than this meal!

I won’t take you through all the chapters because I think you should have a taste for the book now.

See what I did there? A taste for the book?

Oh…Kay.  moving swiftly along…the final chapter is how you can put together the various meals to have themed parties.  It also offers suggestions for table and room decorations so you can really set the scene!!!!  Here are both the menu and the scene suggestions for an Edward party!

The joy of The Nightmare before Dinner lies in that it is seriously good food and cocktails that don’t take themselves to seriously.  Hmmm…sounds kind of like the ethos of this here blog…no wonder I like it so much!

Here’s the recipe for The Nine:

Now, let’s all make ourselves The Nine and jump in the line…..

Day -O….

Many thanks to Net Galley and Quarto Publishing for the ARC of The Nightmare Before Dinner.

Have a wonderful week.  I”m going to binge on Tim Burton films.  Speaking of which…what’s your favourite?

Mine is an absolute four-way tie between Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Treasure Island Sundae / The Sunday Girl

Who would have thunk that so soon after the lack of crushed pineapple in London in August for Pieathalon that,  I would again have it on my shopping list?  Luckily for me, now I am back home and pineapple of all varieties  is once again,  freely available!

Treasure Island Sundae1

The recipe for the Treasure Island Sundae comes from The Golden Circle Tropical Recipe Book, which was a birthday present from my gorgeous friend Ali, a few years ago.  I’ve been meaning to make something from it for ever so long because, quite frankly, this book is BONKERS.  With a subtitle of “Every day meals with a Tropic Holiday Flavour” you just know that this is going to be full of recipes containing pineapple crammed into places pineapple has no business to be.

Golden Circle Tropical Recipe Book

And speaking of Pieathalon, someone out there should be thanking their lucky stars that I didn’t inflict this on them!

Pineapple Shepherd's Pie

Or what about turning that Tropic Holiday vibe Italian with some Spaghetti with Meat Sauce Tropical?

Golden Circle Tropical Recipe Book2

There are also some recipes where the pineapple seems perfectly normal compared to another totally random ingredient.  Let’s take a look at a Hungry Man Salad.

https://www.retrofoodformoderntimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Golden-Circle-Tropical-Recipe-Book3.jpg

So like me, you’re probably wondering what the slices between the pineapple slices are?  My guess was crusty bread. Because maybe hungry men need more carbs than all that white rice. Or maybe crumbed pineapple rings? Weird I know but so far what’s been normal?  I was wrong. On both counts.   Quick, before reading any further, drop down to the comments and tell me what you think they are….

Okay…so the reveal?

A Hungry Man Salad “combines Golden Circle Sliced Pineapple and Beetroot with cooked rice, red and green capsicum, celery, eschalots, gherkin, tomato lettuce and….. a sliced meatloaf.

WTF?  Who does that?

Although I suppose it’s no worse than pineapple, oops, I mean Tropic Holiday Flavour in your spag bol.

I’ll definitely share more from this book in the not too distant! But for today, it’s the Treasure Island Sundae. And thankfully the treasure in that Sundae is not a sliced meat loaf!

The reason we are making the Treasure Island Sundae is because whilst on holiday I read a book called Sunday Girl by Pip Drysdale.  I actually read it in its entirety on the plane to the UK because it’s one of those books that once you start, you can’t put down!

(Also I couldnt’ resist the idea of writing about a sundae and a book called the Sunday Girl while listening to the Blondie song Sunday Girl on a Sunday.  No nasty riverside for me today.  I’m safely ensconced with the four ant-free, bird free and bird poo free walls of my own home…and it’s bliss!).

But back to the book.  How’s this for a premise?

Some love affairs change you forever. Someone comes into your orbit and swivels you on your axis, like the wind working on a rooftop weather vane. And when they leave, as the wind always does, you are different; you have a new direction. And it’s not always north.’

Any woman who’s ever been involved with a bad, bad man and been dumped will understand what it feels like to be broken, broken-hearted and bent on revenge….

So Taylor consults The Art of War and makes a plan. Then she takes the next irrevocable step – one that will change her life forever.

Ah, revenge…a dish best served cold right?  Just like a tropical ice cream sundae!

Treasure Island Sundae2

Here’s the original recipe.  Look at the super gorgeous pineapple page numbers!  😍😍😍

Treasure Island Sundae4

I made a few changes to the recipe as given above.  My supply of maraschino cherries has vanished!  Lord only knows what has happened to them so my fruit component was a strawberry and some blueberries.  Instead of a jelly cross, I used popping candy!  X may not have marked the spot but it was a lot more fun!  And finally, the real treasure for those of you, who like me are counting their calories?  Instead of strawberry ice cream, I used Halo Top Birthday Cake – at 280 calories per TUB you could eat these sundaes all the live long day and not increase your waist size!

Treasure Island Sundae3

The Treasure Island Sundae is a great little dessert.  There’s lots of different flavours and textures and so it is super fun to eat.  The blend of pineapple, lime jelly and the ice cream reminded me of one of my favourite icy – poles the Pine-Lime Splice!

I can see myself making a heap of these as the weather warm up!

And that’s me done!  Have a great week!

Repost from 2018 -Tubing // Ultimate Macaroni and Cheese

One of my joys, particularly on a wet and cold weekend is to curl up with a good book and lose myself for a few hours.  Now, just to be clear, when I say good book, I don’t mean the kind of book that wins literary accolades for their perfectly constructed sentences and their ability to cast a light on the shadows of contemporary society that had previously been ignored.

I mean sure, those books have their place. It’s in a prominent place on the bookshelf so visitors can see how clever and worldly you are.

But no, for there here and now, good refers to one of those guilty pleasure books  – the kind you can race through in an afternoon or two and become totally absorbed in, resurfacing only for snacks and sleep.

Ultimate Mac and Cheese

Tubing by K.A.McKeagney was one of these books.  Tubing is about Polly a 20 something girl living in London with her boyfriend Oliver, a doctor who on the surface seems like a perfect catch but is totally bland.  Polly seems….lacklustre…content just to drift along in her relationship and her job neither of which seem to be fulfilling or providing her with any real meaning or enjoyment.  Enter a chance sexual encounter with a handsome stranger on a train and all of a sudden Polly’s placid life is thrown into turmoil.

Polly becomes obsessed with him and through searching for him online discovers “Tubing” a phenomenon where strangers hook up for sex on crowded tube trains.  Each to their own right?  Anyway, through following a series of tweets, Polly tracks down her handsome stranger.  Tubing provides her with the thrills and excitement that are missing from her regular life.

Until it all goes horribly wrong…

Cue dramatic music….

And cue snacks….or in this case, not so much snacks but a big bowl of carby cheesy comfort food aka Ultimate Mac and Cheese.   (Because Tubing…geddit?  😉)  Is there anything more comfort foody than mac and cheese?  If so, I would like to know about it!

I also like the idea of eating something warm and comforting whilst reading about murder and mayhem.  It creates a nice juxtaposition of knowing exactly what you will get next taste wise versus not knowing what will happen next plot-wise!  Although Ultimate Macaroni and Cheese does have a few twists of its own!

Ultimate Mac and Cheese

The recipe for Ultimate Macaroni and Cheese comes from the Lyndey Milan section of The Great Australian Cookbook.  It differs from regular Mac ‘n’ Cheese in that the normal cheese sauce is replaced by a mix of ricotta, blue cheese, cheddar and leeks.  I loved the hint of blue cheese and the leeks in this!

Ultimate Macaroni and Cheese 3

Here’s the recipe for a delicious take on a classic dish!

Ultimate Mac and Cheese4

Back to Tubing… it’s immensely readable but by no means a perfect novel.  Polly is largely unlikeable and some of her actions (as well as those of some of the other characters) are unfathomable.  The storyline also seems to be unnecessarily convoluted at times.  However, for escapist enjoyment that will have you turning the pages wanting to know what happens next  Tubing is a fine way to while away a few hours!

It also made me wonder if tubing was a real thing?  It seemed a little too well thought out not to be!  London readers, your thoughts?

Thank you to Net Galley and RedDoor Publishing for the ARC of Tubing!

And tell me, what is your perfect comfort food?

Have a great week!

Anne’s Poetical Egg Salad Sandwiches

One of the absolute delights of my childhood was discovering the Anne of Green Gables set of books by Lucy Maud Montgomery.  They were my favourite books for years!  And to be honest, although I haven’t read one in forever, I still have the entire series and it wouldn’t take much for me to be again drawn into the world of Matthew and Marilla, Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe and the adorable red-haired, high-spirited feisty girl known as Anne of Green Gables.  And that’s Anne with an E and don’t you forget it!

Anne Books

These books taught me so much about the world – about love, about friendship and family, about how it’s okay to be different (and how to embrace that difference).  Oh, and how I wasn’t the only person in the world who constantly had to spell their name to people to ensure that they got it right!

So I was overjoyed to find out that there is an Anne of Green Gables Cookbook.  And beside myself to be given a free ARC from NetGalley and Race Point Publishing to review!  Thank you so much!

First up, this book is gorgeous!  The illustrations and the photos are beautiful.  And all of the recipes are referenced to the exact place in the books where they occurred..which a pedant like me totally loves!

I choose to make Anne’s Poetical Egg Salad sandwiches.  And they were delicious.

Anne's Poetical Egg Salad SandwichesOMG…these were so good!

I think sometimes it’s hard when blogging to present something as simple as these sandwiches because…..well…it’s egg salad right and everyone knows how to make that.  so why bother?  But this is also real food, the kind of food I want to make. Eat. Repeat.

Recipe?  Here.

And you can also fancy these up.  The version you are looking at has some chives in the mix.  It’s great with lettuce in the sandwich.  To make it really fancy, a slice of smoked salmon is divine!

Poetical Egg Salad Sandwich5

I adored this book almost as much as the novels that inspired it!

And on that note sweet people, I’m going to bid you adieu for 2017.

Thank you for reading, commenting, liking, sharing.  You’re the best and most wonderful kindred spirits ever!

And for all of you, all my very, very best for a joyful 2018!  May it bring it everything you wish for!

Smore’s Brownies & Sweet Revenge Book Review

The old saying tells us that revenge is a dish best served cold.   A new baking book will also have you believing that revenge is a dish best served sweet.  Sweet Revenge: Passive-Aggressive Desserts for Your Exes & Enemies by Heather Kim, due to be released in January 2018 is a super fun read and contains over 50 sweet treats to help you weather the storm when life gets tough.

Because you know what?  Sometimes when a girl has had gee, I dunno, a week of totally mixed messages and is feeling hurt betrayed and just downright shitty, she just needs a little something something to get her through the day.   And by something something I mean a shit ton of booze cake. Or pudding. Or some  totally amazing S’mores brownies aka…

S'mores Brownies Those of you who are regular readers will know that I adore a pun so the names of the recipes in this book were pure gold for me.

In additions to the Everyday I Regret You S’more Brownies you can also find:

  • Shut Your Stupid Cake Hole – a coconut mochi cake with sesame coconut pecan icing
  • Stop Texting Me You Crepe – a crepe cake with Oreos
  • You’re A Piece of Sheet Cake – a cinco leches cake with malted milk whipped cream and salted dulce de leche drizzle (OMG…yes!!!!!)
  • Go Fudge Yourself – Macinac Island chocolate fudge with white chocolate candied ramen
  • I Ain’t Puddin’ Up With You – Butterscotch puddin’ pots with chocolate sauce

Smores Brownies8

I was beside myself with joy at some of these.  Truly. And not just for the names. I mean cinco leches cake with malted milk whipped cream and salted dulce de leche drizzle sounds like heaven.  Who even knew there were that many leches?  But now I want all cinco of them baked in a cake.  With a   dulce de leche drizzle…

As for the S’mores Brownies, let’s start with the base which a dark, glossy, fudgy brownie which was ridiculously easy to make.

Smores Brownies2Kim provides the recipe for home-made marshmallows to top this.  Being lazy, and in a hurry, I chose to buy some marshmallows.  Which all went wonderfully until….2 pink marshmallows short!!!!!

If you put these on the Brownies whilst they are still warm, they melt a little and fill some of the gaps between…sadly, not all of them!

Never mind, because we are about to cover it all with a Graham Cracker Streusel. And sprinkles!  And then, you get to blowtorch the hell out of it all.  Which is another great way to get out some frustration!

Smores Brownies7

Sweet Revenge not only has some great recipes like the ones above but also handy tips, gorgeous photos and cute drawings.  The downside of Sweet Revenge was that some of the flavour combinations were a little too out there for me vis a vis:

But you know what?  There are always going to be recipes that I don’t  fancy in any book. And it might be better to be edgy than boring! And I know I am making a judgement on a sample size of one but this seems like a pretty solid book – the brownies were amazing!

Here’s the recipe.  This is straight from the book so you can get a feel for the style:

Smores Brownies9

Here are some wise words from Heather on why you should bake for your enemies and exes:

And more wise words on revenge from Old Blue Eyes himself…

Get out there and be successful!  And bake these brownies!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Capstone / Switch Press for the ARC.
